DOCTORAL

PhD Programs Abroad

Three to five year doctoral research programs at universities in USA, UK, Canada, Germany, and Australia. Many positions come with full funding via TA or RA stipends.

Professor outreach is the most important step for a PhD
Unlike UG or Masters applications, a PhD admission often depends on a professor agreeing to supervise your research. Start emailing potential supervisors 6–12 months before the official application deadline. Your research proposal should align with their published work.

What you need to apply

Academics
Master's degree (or strong bachelor's for US direct-PhD programs) — typically 65%+
English test
IELTS 7.0 overall or TOEFL 100+ for most research universities
Research proposal
1,000–3,000 word document outlining your research question and methodology
Professor contact
Email potential supervisors 6–12 months before the deadline — acceptance often depends on supervisor interest
Publications
Not mandatory for most, but any conference papers or thesis work strengthens your profile
GRE
Required for some US PhD programs — check department-by-department. GRE prep guide →

Funding your PhD

Many PhD positions include full or partial funding — unlike UG and Masters programs.

Teaching Assistantship (TA)
Teach undergrad courses in exchange for full tuition waiver + monthly stipend. Common in USA and Canada.
Research Assistantship (RA)
Work on a funded research project under your supervisor. Often includes stipend + fees.
University Fellowship
Merit-based award. No work obligation, typically competitive.
Government Scholarships
DAAD (Germany), Chevening (UK), Vanier (Canada), Fulbright (USA).
Self-funded with bursaries
Some UK PhDs offer partial scholarships. Less common than US/Canada.
