TEST PREP

Duolingo English Test

A fast, at-home English proficiency test with results in approximately 2 days. Accepted by a growing number of universities — verify acceptance with your target programs before registering.

Who should consider DET?

DET may suit your situation — but only if your target programs accept it.

Students with time pressure
Results typically arrive within 2 days — useful when application deadlines are close.
Students preferring home testing
No test centre required. Taken at home on a computer with a camera and microphone.
Students on a tighter budget
Test fee is generally lower than IELTS or TOEFL. Check the official DET website for current pricing.
Students whose target programs accept it
Critical condition: verify acceptance with each specific university and program before registering. Not all institutions accept DET.

What the test measures

DET uses an adaptive format. Tasks across four skill areas are delivered in a single continuous session rather than in separate timed sections.

Literacy

Assesses reading and writing skills through tasks such as completing words, reading sentences, and writing short text responses.

Comprehension

Assesses reading and listening skills. Includes listening to spoken phrases, selecting matching items, and reading passages.

Production

Assesses speaking and writing skills through tasks such as speaking about images, writing short essays, and reading aloud.

Conversation

A short video interview and writing sample included in the submission. These are forwarded to institutions for their own evaluation alongside your score.

When DET makes sense

Always verify institutional acceptance before committing to DET preparation.

Your target programs accept it
Some universities that previously accepted only IELTS or TOEFL now also accept DET. Always check the specific program's admissions page — acceptance varies widely, even within the same institution.
You need results quickly
DET results are typically available within 2 days. If your application deadline is imminent and you haven't taken a test yet, DET may be an option — provided the institution accepts it.
You are applying to US universities
DET is accepted by a number of US colleges and universities. However, acceptance is not universal. Verify before registering.
You are comfortable with adaptive, computer-based testing
DET uses an adaptive format — questions adjust based on your responses. Students who prefer traditional question formats may find IELTS or TOEFL more predictable.

Preparation approach

1
Verify acceptance first
Before preparing, confirm your target institutions accept DET. If they do not, redirect preparation time to IELTS or TOEFL.
2
Take the official practice test
Duolingo offers a free official practice test at englishtest.duolingo.com. Use it to understand the adaptive format and task types.
3
Focus on integrated skills
DET tasks require you to read, listen, speak, and write in an integrated way — not in isolated modules. Practice switching between skills rapidly.
4
Practise the video interview
The video interview is timed. Prepare short, fluent responses to open-ended questions. Record yourself and review before test day.

Common mistakes to avoid

Registering without checking institutional acceptance — not all universities accept DET
Underestimating the video interview — institutions evaluate it themselves alongside the numeric score
Not using the official practice test, which is the most accurate simulation available
Taking the test in a noisy environment — clear audio is required; background noise can affect scoring
Assuming a high score guarantees acceptance — institutions set their own thresholds
Not reading task instructions carefully — the adaptive format changes task types without warning

Frequently asked questions

Is the Duolingo English Test accepted by all universities?
No. Acceptance varies significantly by institution, country, and program. Some universities in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia accept DET for certain programs; others do not. Always verify directly on the official program admissions page before registering.
What score do I need?
Typical program requirements range from 115 to 130+ on a 10–160 scale, but this varies considerably by university and program level. Do not rely on general ranges — check the specific requirement for each program you are applying to.
How long is the Duolingo English Test valid?
Scores are valid for 2 years from the test date. Check that your score is still within the validity window at the time of your application.
Can I retake the test if I am unhappy with my score?
Yes. Duolingo allows retakes, but there may be a waiting period between attempts. Check the official Duolingo English Test website for current retake policies.
Does DET replace IELTS or TOEFL?
Not universally. DET is an additional option accepted by some institutions. If your target programs require IELTS or TOEFL, you will need to take those tests. DET is a supplement, not a universal replacement.
