ENGLISH PROFICIENCY

Prove Your English — Commonly Required by Universities

If English is not your first language, or your previous schooling was not in English, most universities require a standardised English proficiency test. Acceptance varies by institution and course — always verify requirements with the specific program page before preparing.

APTITUDE / ADMISSION

Demonstrate Academic Ability — For Graduate Programs

Aptitude tests are separate from English tests. They assess reasoning, analytical, and domain-specific skills and are required by some graduate programs — particularly in the USA and Canada. Requirements vary significantly by school and program. Many programs are now test-optional — always verify before preparing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need both an English test and a GRE or GMAT?
Often yes — many graduate programs in the US and Canada require an English proficiency test (IELTS or TOEFL) separately from a GRE or GMAT. Some programs waive the English requirement if you completed your previous degree in English, but this varies by institution. Always confirm with the specific program's admissions page.
Which English test is accepted by more universities — IELTS or TOEFL?
Both are accepted by thousands of universities globally. IELTS is more commonly required in the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. TOEFL is popular for US admissions. Most universities that accept one also accept the other. Check your specific program's requirements rather than assuming.
How far in advance should I take my test?
Plan to take your test at least 4–6 months before your application deadline. This gives you time to retake it if needed. Most scores (IELTS, TOEFL, GRE, GMAT) are valid for 2 years from the test date.
Can I get a waiver for English tests or GRE/GMAT?
Some programs offer English test waivers for students who studied in an English-medium institution. GRE and GMAT waivers became more common post-COVID for select programs. However, waivers are not guaranteed — submitting a strong score generally strengthens your application rather than weakening it.
Which test is easier — IELTS or TOEFL?
Neither is objectively easier. IELTS uses a conversational Speaking format (face-to-face with an examiner) and British English conventions. TOEFL uses a computer-based Speaking format and is more integrated (tasks combine reading, listening, and speaking). Most students prefer the format that matches how they naturally process English.
